Copper Hinges or Brass Hinges? What a Copper Hinge Is When You Order Door Hinges

Buyers in many countries ask for copper hinges. What they want, almost without exception, is a brass hinge, and the difference is not pedantry. Copper on its own is too soft to carry a door: a hinge knuckle made of it would wear and bend under a leaf that swings a few hundred times a day. Every hinge sold as copper-colored or copper-toned is either brass, which is copper alloyed with zinc, or another metal with a copper-colored finish.

What the trade means by a copper hinge

In practice the phrase covers three different things, and it pays to find out which one a customer means before quoting.

The third row is where most misunderstandings start. Antique copper, AC, is a finish color. It says nothing about what is underneath. The same AC code appears on brass hinges, on steel hinges and on zinc alloy hardware, so a quotation that says AC and nothing else has not yet said what the hinge is made of.

Why brass and not copper

Adding zinc to copper makes an alloy that is harder, stronger and easier to machine than copper alone, while keeping the warm color and the resistance to ordinary indoor corrosion that people associate with copper. That is why brass has carried doors for centuries, and why nobody in the hardware trade makes load-bearing hinges out of unalloyed copper.

What we make in brass

Two of our hinges publish brass as their material. The B024 is offered from 2.0 to 3.5mm thick, in polished brass, satin brass, antique brass, antique copper and chrome finishes, with other finishes to order. The B025 comes in antique brass, antique copper, polished brass, satin brass, stainless steel, bright polished and satin chrome finishes, with the size made to the customer's request. Both open from 90 to 180 degrees. So a buyer who asks us for a copper hinge in antique copper can have a brass hinge in the AC finish, and the quotation will say both.

The one thing to check near the sea

Brass has one failure mode that matters on coastal projects: dezincification, where salt and moisture leach the zinc out of the alloy and leave a weak, porous copper-colored surface behind. It does not happen indoors in an ordinary building. It does happen on exterior doors near the sea and in wet, chlorinated spaces. What to put in the order

Write the base metal and the finish as two separate words: brass, antique copper. If the project names a brass grade, add it. And if the drawing or the customer only says copper, ask which of the three rows above they mean before the quotation goes out. It costs one question, and it avoids a container of hinges that are the right color and the wrong metal.
